Terms of service
Last updated: July 11, 2026
BookProwl is run by Bookfox Inc., a company based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. These terms are the agreement between you and Bookfox Inc. for using the BookProwl website. If you use BookProwl, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
What BookProwl is
BookProwl is a free directory of used book sales and bookstores across the US and Canada: library Friends sales, charity and church sales, estate sales, used bookstores, and the like. You can browse listings and search by location without an account. Listing a sale and browsing are free.
We put listings together from public information and from what organizers and readers submit. We are not the organizer of the sales you find here, and we don't run them. Anything that happens at a sale, or between you and an organizer, is between you and them.
Your account
You need an account to save favorites, set up sale alerts, leave a review, add a photo, submit a sale, or claim an organization. You can sign in with your email (we send a link, or you can use a password) or with Google. When you sign in with an email we haven't seen before, we create an account for you automatically.
Keep your login to yourself. You're responsible for what happens under your account, so let us know at [email protected] if you think someone else has gotten into it. You must be old enough to agree to these terms in your province or state. BookProwl isn't directed at children.
Acceptable use
When you use BookProwl, you agree not to:
- Post false, misleading, or spam listings, reviews, or photos.
- Post anything unlawful, hateful, harassing, obscene, or that infringes someone else's rights, including their copyright or privacy.
- Claim an organization you aren't actually connected to, or misrepresent your role.
- Impersonate another person or organization.
- Scrape, crawl, copy, or bulk-download the directory, or use bots or automated tools against the site without our written permission.
- Try to break, overload, probe, or get around the security of the site, or interfere with anyone else's use of it.
- Use BookProwl to send unwanted marketing to anyone.
- Use the site to break any law.
We can remove content and suspend or close accounts that break these rules, and we can report unlawful activity to the authorities where appropriate.
Content you post
You keep any rights you have in the reviews, photos, and other content you post. Neither of us owns the underlying facts, like a sale's dates, hours, or address. So that we can run the site, you grant Bookfox Inc. a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, reproduce, and adapt that content (for example, resizing a photo or excerpting a review) for the purposes of operating, moderating, improving, and promoting the BookProwl directory. This licence lasts as long as your content is on BookProwl. If you close your account and content you posted remains published on the site, the licence continues for that content until it is removed; you can ask us to remove it at any time by emailing [email protected].
Only post content you have the right to share, and by posting it you confirm that you do. Don't upload photos you didn't take or don't have permission to use.
Photos from readers are checked before they appear on a page. Reviews may be moderated or removed. We can review, edit, or remove any content, and we can take a listing down, for any reason, including to keep the directory accurate and useful. We don't promise to monitor everything, and we're not obliged to publish anything you submit.
Listing accuracy
Sale listings come from the community and from public sources, so details can be wrong or out of date: dates move, sales get canceled, hours change. Please check with the organizer before you travel to a sale. We don't guarantee that any listing is accurate, current, or complete, and we're not responsible for a wasted trip.
Found something wrong with a listing? Email us at [email protected] or use our contact page and we'll look into it.
Claiming an organization
If you run or help run a book sale organization, you can claim its page. We ask for your role at the organization and review the request before approving it. Once you're approved, you can manage that organization's listings. Claiming a page doesn't transfer ownership of the listing data to you, and we can reverse a claim if we approved it in error or it turns out to be inaccurate.
Our content
The BookProwl name, the site's design and code, and the way we organize and present the directory belong to Bookfox Inc. or the people we license them from. You can use the site to find sales, share links to listings, and print details for your own use. You may not copy the directory itself or pass it off as your own.
The service is provided "as is"
BookProwl is a free service, and we offer it as is and as available, without warranties or conditions of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of accuracy, availability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We don't promise the site will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, or that any listing is correct.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Bookfox Inc. and its directors, officers, and employees are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential losses, lost profits, or lost data arising out of your use of BookProwl, or for anything that happens at a sale or venue you found through BookProwl. To the same extent, our total liability to you for all claims connected with BookProwl, which is free to use, is limited to CAD $100.
None of these limits apply to fraud or wilful misconduct on our part, to personal injury caused by our negligence, or to any liability the law says can't be limited or excluded.
Some places don't allow certain warranty disclaimers or liability limits. Nothing in these terms takes away rights the law says you must have; in those places, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
Your responsibility for what you post
If someone brings a claim against Bookfox Inc. because of content you posted, because you broke these terms, or because of your misuse of the site, you agree to cover the losses, damages, and reasonable legal costs we incur as a result. We'll let you know about any such claim and won't settle it on your behalf without being reasonable about it.
Closing your account
You can close your BookProwl account any time. Email us at [email protected] and we'll close it and confirm by email. If you've borrowed any equipment from us, we'll arrange its return first. There's more detail in our privacy policy.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and we can change or discontinue BookProwl (or any part of it) at any time. If we discontinue the site, these terms end too, except the parts that by their nature should survive: the content licence for content still published, the disclaimers, the limitation of liability, and your responsibility for what you posted.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute connected with these terms or with BookProwl will be resolved in the courts of British Columbia, and you and Bookfox Inc. each agree to that venue. If the law of your home province or state gives you consumer rights that can't be taken away by contract, those rights are unaffected.
About these terms
These terms, together with our privacy policy, are the entire agreement between you and Bookfox Inc. about BookProwl, and they replace any earlier understanding. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, that part is trimmed or removed as needed and the rest stays in effect. If we don't enforce a part of these terms right away, we're not giving up the right to enforce it later.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as BookProwl changes. When we do, we'll post the updated terms here and change the date at the top. If a change meaningfully affects your rights, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice before it takes effect, by email if you have an account or by a notice on the site. Continuing to use BookProwl after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms; if you don't agree with a change, stop using the site and, if you like, ask us to close your account.
